How Swapnil Singh's talent found opportunity and redemption at RCB

How Swapnil Singh's talent found opportunity and redemption at RCB

Veteran all-rounder contemplated retirement before RCB picked him, and has played vital role in their march to playoffs

Bengaluru, May 20,2024: Swapnil Singh has become an overnight star, playing a vital role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s stunning run to the IPL playoffs. The spin-bowling all-rounder made his RCB debut in Hyderabad last month and has since gone on to be part of each of their six smashing wins on the trot. Having almost given up on his cricket career until he was picked up by RCB in the auction, Swapnil’s story is one of fulfilment and redemption when talent meets opportunity in an enabling environment.

Speaking on RCB Bold Diaries after RCB marched into the playoffs at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Swapnil revealed how he had contemplated retirement before RCB chose him at the auction in what was an emotional moment for him and his family.

“The day of the IPL auction I was travelling to Dharamsala for a game. It was around 7-8 pm after I landed. Nothing had happened by then and the last rounds were on. When I missed out at first, I thought that’s it. Frankly I thought it was all over,” Swapnil said.

“I thought I would play out the ongoing (domestic) season, and if needed, I would end my career after playing the next season because I did not want to keep playing all my life. There are other things to do well in life as well. I was very disappointed,” said the veteran cricketer, who had made his senior domestic debut back in 2006 as a teenager and also shared rooms with Virat Kohli at age-group level.

And then, the turnaround came, as RCB raised the paddle for Swapnil at the auction. Swapnil could not control his tears. “As soon as my family called, we broke down. Because no one else understands how emotional the journey has been.”

Swapnil credited RCB head coach Andy Flower for keeping the faith in him in the lead-up to the auction. Swapnil had impressed Flower as a net bowler earlier, and the coach asked him to come for an RCB training camp.

“Before RCB picked me in the auction, they had organized a trial-cum-camp. I spoke to Andy sir and told him all about how my (domestic) season had gone. I told him, ‘Just give me one chance. This might be my last chance. Just have faith in me.’ He told he had faith in me. He called me for the camp,” Swapnil said.

When he entered the RCB dressing room, Swapnil knew he would get the opportunity to play eventually, and was mentally prepared to wait for his chance.

“I never entered the ground thinking that I am not playing. My first practice session was the first match for me, it was not just a practice session. I knew that I would have to be on target from ball one if I had to play even one game. So, nets was my match,” Swapnil said.

And when the opportunity came, Swapnil grabbed it with both hands, eager to contribute with both bat and ball. “I would tell my brother that I have neither scored a four nor a six in the IPL, and I have taken only one wicket. So I really want to hit a four and a six.”

As it turned out, Swapnil made an impact right away on RCB debut. He hit a six and a four in an unbeaten 12 off 6, and also picked up a couple of wickets. “I knew that if I got a chance to play, our captain Faf (du Plessis) would definitely give me an over to bowl. And in my first over, I did not bowl six balls, I bowled seven. I did not know I would bowl a no-ball. And I got a wicket off the seventh ball, so it is god’s blessings,” Swapnil signed off.

Thailand Open: Satwik-Chirag clinch men’s doubles crown without dropping a game

Thailand Open: Satwik-Chirag clinch men’s doubles crown without dropping a game

New Delhi, May 20: Top seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty clinched their second Thailand Open Super 500 men’s doubles crown without dropping a game in Bangkok on Sunday.

The world no. 3 Indian combination, who had won their first Thailand Open crown back in 2019, rarely looked under pressure against their opponents throughout the tournament and showed the same domination in the final as they defeated China’s Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yi 21-15, 21-15 in just 46 minutes.

The Indian pair started the final by opening up a 5-1 lead before the Chinese had their best phase of the summit clash as they won nine of the next 11 points. But Chirag and Satwik wrested control with some aggressive play and packed the opening game rather easily.

The eventual champions always had the upper hand in the second game and just like the first won five consecutive points at the end to kick off their trademark celebrations.

“Thailand Open has been a special tournament for us as we won our first Super 500 crown here and have won many more tournaments thereafter. We are hoping that this victory will start another winning run for us,” said Satwik after clinching the crown.

Speaking about their performance in the final, Satwik said they played their best game against their Chinese opponents. “We knew that we cannot relax even for a single point against our opponents as they fight till the end. But we played our best game of the tournament today and controlled the situation very well,” he added.

The victory also helped the Indian combination earn 9200 ranking points and prize purse of $33180 (approx. Rs 27,63,306.40).

Looking to see more attacking fast bowling from Siraj and Yash: RCB head coach Flower

Looking to see more attacking fast bowling from Siraj and Yash: RCB head coach Flower

As RCB returns to Chinnaswamy for action tonight, Flower gives a shout-out to the 12th Man Army

Bengaluru, May 5, 2024: As they return to M Chinnaswamy Stadium after nearly three weeks, Royal Challengers Bengaluru is upbeat going into the last third of its IPL 2024 campaign. A vital component of RCB’s back-to-back wins in Hyderabad and Ahmedabad was their attacking fast bowling; head coach Andy Flower is eager to see more of that from the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Yash Dayal in tonight’s clash in front of the 12th Man Army.

“Our batsmen will definitely be looking to bat out there in the middle not only on a good batting deck but in front of our brilliant crowd. What I have enjoyed seeing is our fast bowling unit bowling in a really attacking fashion. We have seen them take more wickets in the powerplay in the last three games. So we are looking at seeing more of the attacking fast bowling from the likes of Yash Dayal and particularly Siraj who has been outstanding particularly with his yorkers,” said head coach Flower on RCB Game Day.

With four games to go in RCB’s IPL season, Flower is firmly keeping the faith. “Playoff hopes are still alive and that is a brilliant position, obviously we would have liked to have been much closer to the playoffs than we are but we are still there, the chances are still there and we are still believing,” he said.

Meanwhile, captain Faf du Plessis is proud of how his team has shown character and turned things around over the last few matches. “Pressure is always there for performance, that is part of the game. Pressure is there when you are winning as well, you need to perform. For me the nice thing from a captaincy point of view is that we are playing the style of cricket that we have been wanting to play for long so it is more a happiness that we are doing ourselves justice whereas before, the opposite was happening.

“Proud of the boys and the way they have stood up. It takes a lot of character when you are down in the dumps, so the boys have responded really well and the way they have played the last three games has been really good,” Du Plessis said.

There has been some rain in the build-up to tonight’s match but coach Flower does not feel it will be a major factor. “The rain hasn’t really changed a lot in our preparation or selection. It is brilliant that Chinnaswamy has such a good drainage system, so I don’t think that is a big factor but I do know that Bengaluru needs the water so it is brilliant to have some of this beautiful rain,” coach Flower said.
