Hockey India Team Manpreet Singh to captain At Hockey World League Semi Final London

Hockey India Team Manpreet Singh to captain At Hockey World League Semi Final London

New Delhi,18 May(National24news.com) Hockey India today named the Indian Senior Men’s team to take part in the 3 Nations Invitational Tournament to begin in Dusseldorf, Germany on June 1 followed by the Men’s Hockey World League Semi Final London starting June 15. The 18-member team will play two matches each against hosts Germany and Belgium before arriving in London for the prestigious Men’s Hockey World League Semi Final where India are grouped with Canada, Netherlands, Pakistan and Scotland in Pool B.

The team led by Manpreet Singh along with deputy skipper Chinglensana Singh Kangujam will see Pardeep Mor, Kothajit Singh join the defence line along with Surender Kumar, Rupinder Pal Singh and Harmanpreet Singh.

Harmanpreet and Rupinder will continue to be entrusted with the responsibilities of converting those crucial penalty corners while Akash Chikte and Vikas Dahiya will carry the onus of goalkeepers for the team in the absence of PR Sreejesh, who sustained an injury while playing against Australia in the league stage at the 26th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Tournament 2017.

The midfield will feature S.K Uthappa, Satbir Singh, Harjeet Singh, Chinglensana Singh and the experienced Manpreet Singh and Sardar Singh. Both Uthappa and Satbir were rested for the previous tournament in Malaysia where the team won Bronze Medal.

Forward-line will see Ramandeep Singh come back into the fold as he joins SV Sunil, Akashdeep Singh, Talwinder Singh and Mandeep Singh in the attack. “The idea was to bring in a couple of changes in positions after Sultan Azlan Shah Cup. Like I had said before, there are three tours this year including Azlan Shah Cup where we would like to give opportunities to younger players. Though we are taking a few players who are not that experienced, we still want to do well and the aim is to finish in Top 2 at the Men’s Hockey World League Semi Final and I look forward to see how the boys will perform against big teams,” stated Chief Coach Roelant Oltmans about the team composition.

According to the Dutchman, the biggest takeaway from the season opener in Malaysia was the team’s improvised style of play and ball possession. “Our style of play was good, we were fast and also when we compared statistics, we had better ball possession (about 62 per cent on an average) which is a big improvement from previous years. But I would like to see our conversion rate in field goals and PC to improve from a 20 per cent and 24 per cent respectively. We will be working on bringing in small variations in those aspects during the two-week camp in Bengaluru,” stated Oltmans.

The team resumed the national camp on May 14 and will continue till May 28 before they leave for Dusseldorf, Germany on May 29.

Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy enter semis of Hockey India 7th Junior National Hockey Championship 2017

Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy enter semis of Hockey India 7th Junior National Hockey Championship 2017

Bhopal, 12 May (National24news.com) With a strong presence of junior India campers in the team, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy eves inch closer to the title at the Hockey India 7th Junior National Hockey Championship 2017, Women (A Division) being held in their home turf in Bhopal. Having topped their Pool and overcoming stiff challenge by Sports Authority of India in the quarterfinal, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy have made it to their first semifinal appearance in two years.

Led by captain Karishma Singh, the team features Suman Devi Thoudam, Neelu Dadiya and keeper Divya Thepe who have played for the Junior Indian women’s team. “We are very excited to enter the Semifinals and are looking forward to a good game of hockey against Hockey Punjab on Saturday. We are confident of entering the final and we will play with that aim tomorrow,” stated team captain Karishma Singh.

Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy based in Gwalior has given a reason for girls from different backgrounds to vie for a career in hockey. “We get very good support from the Madhya Pradesh sports minister Yashodhara Raje Sindhia who has helped in improving the training facilities here. Also the fact that the Indian women’s team has been doing well and after they qualified for the Rio Olympics, more and more girls are interested in pursuing hockey as a career,” expressed Rajni Sengar, Team Manager at Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy.

Against Hockey Punjab, the hosts will have their task cut out. Last year's winners Hockey Punjab beat Hockey Gangpur- Odisha 5-3 to make the semifinals this year. They have been consistent in their performance through the tournament and most of their players have showcased excellent form. “It will be a tough fight and we will need to put that extra effort if we have to beat them. But the fact that we are playing in home ground gives us more confidence,” said Singh about the semifinal.

In the second semifinal, Hockey Haryana will take on Hockey Jharkhand. In the previous edition, Hockey Jharkhand were edged out in the semifinal by Hockey Punjab who beat them 7-1. Hockey Haryana on the other hand had beaten Hockey Odisha in the semifinal to play the title round with Hockey Punjab last year. Whether they will be able to repeat last year's heroics, only time will tell.

India go down fighting against Australia

India go down fighting against Australia

Malaysia (Ipoh): 2 May (National24news.com) A resilient India went down fighting in their game against defending champions Australia in a thriller of an encounter here at the 26th Sultan Azlan Shah Tournament 2017 on Tuesday. It was Eddie Ockenden (30’), Tom Craig (34’) and Tom Wickham (51’) who were responsible for Australia’s 3-1 win while India’s lone scorer was Harmanpreet Singh (26’).

Played in front of a vocal Malaysian crowd who rallied behind India, there was no doubt this top of the table clash between previous edition’s finalists was going to be played with pace and skill, and the teams didn't disappoint.

It was Australia's Tyler Lovell who had a busier first quarter in goal, his saves keeping Australia from dropping behind too early in the game. He padded away a fiercely-struck flick by dragger Rupinder Pal Singh in the ninth minute. India had won another PC earlier in the quarter but Harmanpreet Singh unfortunately couldn’t get his stick on the ball. A brilliant opportunity went amiss in the 11th minute when an instinctive Akashdeep Singh tried to get a reverse stick to deflect the ball into the post but Pardeep Mor’s pass was slightly wide. Though Australia began their attack with a PC in the very first minute of the match, P.R Sreejesh was exceptional to save Trent Mitton’s dragflick.

After ending the first quarter in stalemate, India made the first breakthrough when a nonchalant Harmanpreet Singh showcased his ability to double up as a forward when he dribbled past Aussie defenders into the circle to score a sensational field goal in the 26th minute. India’s 1-0 lead, however, didn’t last long enough with Eddie Ockenden converting a goal from a rebound in the 30th minute to go into the half-time at 1-1.

The third quarter saw India’s Akash Chikte who had replaced an injured Sreejesh in the first quarter, make several saves but the Australians were continuously looking for opportunities to get ahead of India. After a series of failed attempts at converting a PC, Australia’s lead came in the 34th minute through Tom Craig who came up with an improvised shot on goal after being assisted by his skipper Matthew Swann. This was Craig’s fifth goal of the tournament after he got a hat-trick against Malaysia.

Having conceded two crucial goals, it was important India played tactically in the final 15 minutes. But the Australians kept the pressure on and it didn’t help when Tom Wickham was unstoppable in the circle as he converted a goal in the 51st minute to take Australia’s lead to 3-1 and eventually win the game to stay on top pf the table in the league stage.

Her 57th minute strike gave Hockey Coorg the three points and a second win on the trot in the tournament.
